Review New Race Festival Zolder

Wim Kuijl and Erik Bruynoghe were the fastest in both dry and wet conditions

Following the opening weekend of the Spa Summer Classic, the New Race Festival at Zolder was next on the Belcar Historic Cup calendar, just under a week later. Thirty-nine cars made their way to Limburg for the second round of the season. The programme featured two races characterised by changeable weather conditions.

Wim Kuijl secured pole position at the wheel of the stunning Ford Capri RS 3100 Cosworth, ahead of his brother Tim in an identical car. Luc Branckaerts set the third-fastest time in his Corvette, but a faulty cylinder head gasket prevented him from starting the race. The Porsches driven by Luc Moortgat and Erik Bruynoghe were therefore the main opposition.

In Race 1, held on a dry track, the St. Paul team's Capris wasted no time in securing a one-two finish ahead of Luc Moortgat's Porsche 964 and the BMWs driven by Dieleman, Boffin and Alders, as well as Verheggen's Mercedes. Bruynoghe was forced to retire due to a puncture. As for Dieter Kuijl's spectacular BMW CSL, it suffered from clutch problems throughout the weekend.

Race 2 took on a completely different character in the rain. The results of Race 1 were used to determine the second starting grid of the weekend. And although the Ford Capris started from the front row once again, their considerable power made them difficult to drive on a waterlogged track, forcing them, as the laps went by, to concede defeat to the competition. Tim Kuijl even dropped out of the running due to a gearbox failure, whilst his brother Wim was powerless against the Porsches of Bruynoghe and Moortgat.

Bruynoghe won the race but was handed a 30-second penalty for accelerating a little too quickly at the restart under safety car conditions. Moortgat was therefore declared the winner ahead of 'rain master' Bruynoghe and Wim Kuijl. Meanwhile, Samuel Verheggen and Evertjan Alders were battling it out once again, with a top-five finish at stake. However, they were powerless against David Potters' Peugeot 206 GTi, which felt right at home on the waterlogged track. Potters finished fourth overall and won Platform 6. The leader of that same platform, Sidney Dieleman, was forced to retire due to a broken water pump.

The winners in the various classes were therefore Dieter Kuijl (1), Wim Kuijl (2), Jan Van Elderen (3), Luc Moortgat (4) and David Potters (5).

The leaders in these categories remained those who were already at the top of the standings at the end of the Spa Summer Classic, namely Dieter Kuijl (1), Wim Kuijl (2), Jan Van Elderen (3), Luc Moortgat (4) and Sidney Dieleman (6).

Wim Kuijl Dominates the Competition at Spa Summer Classic

The 2026 Belcar Historic Cup season got underway at the Spa Summer Classic, delivering two strong podiums, an entry list as attractive as it was diverse, and, unfortunately, several disappointments. While many drivers can look back on a solid opening weekend, others already have wounds to lick. However, there will be little time to recover: as early as next weekend, races three and four of the season will take place during the New Race Festival at Circuit Zolder. The early championship leaders across the various classes are Dieter Kuijl, Wim Kuijl, Jan Van Elderen, Luc Moortgat and Sidney Dieleman.

At the wheel of his Ford Capri 3100 RS Cosworth, Wim Kuijl set an impressive 2:36.481 in qualifying, finishing more than two seconds clear of his brother Tim, driving a BMW 325i E46. Luc Moortgat secured the third-fastest time in his Porsche 964, ahead of similar cars entered by Edgar Salewski and Erik Bruynoghe. The latter struggled with transmission issues and was ultimately forced to retire. Jan Van Elderen placed his Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 FIA in sixth position, ahead of Dieter Kuijl and his brand-new BMW 3.5 CSL 24V. A surprising Patrick Verbelen broke into the top 10 with his Nissan 200 SX. Eric Nulens went off track at Raidillon and had to withdraw. Samuel Verheggen (Mercedes) and Tim Kuijl (BMW) encountered problems in a support race, dropping them to the back of the grid. Tim Kuijl ultimately lined up with a spare Capri 3100 RS.

Same Winners Across the Classes

In Race 1, only Luc Moortgat's Porsche 964 RS was able to match Wim Kuijl's pace. Behind them, several thrilling battles kept the crowd entertained, notably the impressive duel between the Porsche 911 RSRs of Wittke and Salewski. In the end, Wittke secured third place ahead of Salewski. Dieter Kuijl and Jan Van Elderen took victories in FIA Classes 1 and 3 respectively. Verheggen also delivered a strong performance, finishing ahead of Sidney Dieleman and Evertjan Alders, while Dieleman claimed victory in Class 6.

The results of Race 1 determined the starting grid for Race 2, allowing Wim Kuijl to start once again from pole position, alongside Luc Moortgat. Behind them lined up the RSRs of Wittke and Salewski, followed by Dieter Kuijl (BMW), Jan Van Elderen (Ford), Evertjan Alders (BMW), Samuel Verheggen (Mercedes), Sidney Dieleman (BMW), and Portugal's Lima in a BMW M3 E30. Once again, Tim Kuijl had to start from the back of the grid after a troubled Race 1.

Wim Kuijl and Luc Moortgat once again dominated, steadily pulling away from the rest of the field. Race 2 largely mirrored Race 1, including another fierce battle between Wittke and Salewski for fourth place. With five minutes remaining, Wittke made a mistake at La Source hairpin, triggering a red flag and bringing the race to an early end. Dieter Kuijl's BMW 3.5 CSL once again took victory in Class 1, ahead of Jan Van Elderen and the trio of Alders, Verheggen and Dieleman, who fought hard until the finish. Notably, Tim Kuijl delivered a spectacular comeback in the spare Ford Capri, climbing to an impressive third place overall.

Next weekend, the Belcar Historic Cup will be back in action at the New Race Festival, where all Belcar series will be on track.
